mailing list question

I am writing a mailing list script for my site. I am gonna store them to a mysql table. Say, i have 1000 records, and i wanna send them emails at once. I think i am gonna use a loop to do it. When the script is executing, can i close my browser? or i have to wait for the script to fininsh?

is there another way to do that?
