tranparent session id

i have been developing a site on a local server making extensive use of transparent session ids to refrain from relying on cookies.

after deploying the site to the remote server, i noticed that the session id was not being appended automatically to the links. i checked the server configuration and it says that trans_sess_id is active.

i tried this on another account on another server, and the same thing happened- even though the server seems to be configured just like my development server, the transparent sess id does not work.

what am i doing wrong?

Does this happen with any page, or just after using a form? I know there is an issue with using GET style forms...

I was just wondering if the PHP used in the production environment was compiled with the same command line arguments as the one used in the development environment. In particular would be the --enable-trans-sid command line argument.

how can i determine this?

i have assumed that if the php.ini has the enable trans sid set to 1 that it was compiled with enable trans sid. is this assusmption correct?

You can use the phpinfo() function. This will show you a bunch of info about the configuration of PHP you are using including the arguments used in building it.

Ed is correct, session.use_trans_sid is simply a flag to tell PHP whether or not to enable it at run time; PHP has to be configured and compiled with --enable-trans-sid for that flag to actually have an affect.

It's not documented in the PHP manual, but it is commented in the php.ini file as follows (this is from a PHP installation that was configured without the --enable-trans-sid option btw):

session.use_trans_sid = 1 ; use transient sid support if enabled
; by compiling with --enable-trans-sid

So if I don't have a version of PHP installed with the "--enable-trans-sid" command line argument, then transparent session stuff won't work, eh?

Hmmm....maybe I'll install PHP on my powerbook tomorrow and have a look see.
