Faster in linux than on windows

Hello,

We have built an intranet application using PHP. This application runs about 10 times faster on Linux than on Windows NT.

Does anyone have any idea on how to overcome this?

Linux Environment:
PHP 4.0.5 with Apache Webserver and mysql 3.23.33 database.

Windows NT Environment:
PHP 4.0.5 with IIS Webserver and mssql 7.0 database.

First, windows is slower "fullstop"

but more importantly, you did not specify the hardware used for windows and linux....

Reasons why it is slower on your Windows box:

1. Windows NT (whatever version you run)
2. IIS
3. MSSQL Server 7.

What other processes are running on the two boxes?

The hardware you run on will play a major part but assuming the boxes are identical as you seem to have been benchmarking them; then the answer to your query is that you can't overcome this.

Why would you want to? Just use the Linux box. Why do you need to use the Windows box?

Internet or Intranet, in the same hardware, Linux is plain faster than Windows. If there are hardware differences, that can widen the distance between the two machines. Could you elaborate on the hardware differences between the two machines, if any?

PHP and IIS are not a good combo for best performance on windows.

due to the fact that windows is designed to use multi-threading applications to achieve maximum performance, whereas Linux can run multi-process based apps nearly as fast as multi-threaded ones, PHP (which is multi-process, not multi threaded) is never gonna be as fast on windows as linux.

Is there a reason you don't wanna use linux?
