whats the best way to compare date/time?

help!what's the best way to compare times in php? lets say that i've an appointment from 8:15 to 9:15. i input a time duration, take for example i am checking whether i'm free, which is 2 hours. what's the best way to show that 8:15 to 9:15 is not a time which i am free?
the date format doesn't matter whether it is php (unix timestamp) or mysql.

if this might be too complex, what is the best way to compare 2 times?

The easiest way is by comparing unix-timestamps.
There was a similar question a few days ago about reserving equipment through a mysql database. Do a search on the forum for "reservation mysql date" or something...
