showing stationary in mail

I lost all kinds of time yesterday trying to no avail to get a gif image to show in my mail as a backgound image. I can show it with an <img src> do i need to add something else to my Content-Type: in my mail headers?
I am adding this now
$header .= "Content-Type: text/html\n";
Anyone?

Just send an html file with
<body bgimage="">

That did not fix it, I have tried <BODY BACKGROUND=""> now <BODY BGIMAGE=""> I tried using a table and CSS the graphic in....
