Alternatives to Zend Encoder?

I am interested in re-writing a current app to be web based using PHP, however hiding the source code is a must (as the app will be deployed on intranet at remote client sites, so it will be possible for third parties to look at the source).
Are there any alternatives to Zend Encoder (and I mean any...maybe even encrypted file systems, any idea at all is worthwhile).

At $2,400 US per license it's just ridiculous how they've priced it.

I'd prefer to use PHP since it's learning curve is just so amazingly short (I learned the basics and converted an entire site to it in 2 days!!!), but if I can't get around this I'll have to look at Java as an alternative and I'd prefer to stick with PHP...but at that price its too steep for me.

So, any ideas at all how to hide the source of your .php files?

You should check out there developers lic, its only $50 a month and gives you the encoder to use..

$50 per month with a minimum contract of 12 months = 600$ US, i.e. nearly a $1000 Canadian. Still pretty priceyfor that occasional small-time project...but yes, I agree it's much better, I will consider it.

PHP Accelerator

A free php cache (similar to Zend Cache) which speeds up script execution and in my tests is as fast as Zend Cache (yet free!). There are builds for Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris I believe.

It is possible to use the files it compiles without their source files - so you can distribute your app without the source code.

PHP Obfuscator/Obscurer

"It is a free and open PHP program that makes PHP source code almost impossible to read and edit for normal humans."

Take a look at the site:

It basically takes your code and reformats it, renaming functions and variables to obscure names. The site lists advantages and disadvantages of the product.
It is nice because it doesn't need a decoder to be installed on the server, however it may take a little re-working of your code to get it functional.
The big plus: It's Free.

If you are looking to protect your code and are willing to put in a little effort before shelling out a couple grand, it's definitely worth checking out.
