Hi all,

I am in intern and looking to teach myself PHP for my next project. However, I have only little experience doing server side programming and my next project deals with a search engine for the web site. I want to make it a database driven, but I just don't know where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dude,

There are several options for you.

Build engine yourself - this is a good option if you are trying to learn technology or your site is not too big. Other than that you'll be reinventing a wheel.
Get some of the site engines that are available for free. ht://dig is one (www.htdig.org) MnoGoSearch is another (www.mnogosearch.ru).
Build APIs around MySQL and let MySQL be the engine. Go to www.mysql.com and check chapter 12 in documentation section. Chapter 12 is Full Text Search! <b>This is the option I recommend</b>.
Use MySQL as an engine, yet instead of using Full Text Search just use LIKE statement with % % wildcards.
