I was wondering if any knew of any any free website hosting services with PHP4 and mySQL installed on there systems for use, or atleast any services with cheap sub-domain hosting.

I'm trying to make a simple form that mails the content of a text field.

mail ($mailto, $subject, $message, "From:$sender");

when I use this however, all ' " and other characters are automatically escaped. When I print the string the backslashes appear!

Why don't the escaped characters work?

for less than $75 a year, this price is only if you already have a domain registered. I'm not sure what the price would be if you didn't have one.

Domain or sub-domain, either works for me. Mainly right now I am just going to test PHP out to see if I like it more than Perl...

If you're just experimenting and not expecting any serious traffic, check out www.f2s.com. I don't know too much about them, one of my mates from the php-gtk group has tossed her php-gtk widget guide up on it, but I do know that they give free out webspace with unlimited email accounts, mySQL/PHP/Perl CGI support. Might be what you're looking for to prove to yourself that PHP is better than Perl for most things:-} HTH,
