MySql querys for a penpal site

I have a penpal site using php4 and MySql. It works so far. But I don't know how to tell the people how many members from a certain country we have. (there is a country code field) I know how to select this field but I don't know how to count a certain value (like "Afganistan").

second question:

How can I build an interface that makes it possible to the registered members to change their entries?

for the first question:

SELECT country_column, count(*) AS cnt
FROM table
GROUP BY country_column
ORDER BY country_culumn

For the second, you'll need a way of letting users log-on.
Have a look at sessions, there are plenty of helpfull hints in the forum about user-login logout systems.
