Running secure scripts

Hi,
Can anyone tell me how to password protect .php files and directories?
Information on how to keep my scripts secure will also be very helpful.
If there is a tutorial or article somewhere that I can read up, the web address will be greatly appreciated.

But this only works on Apache. I have no idea how you do it otherwise. Of course you could let the PHP files take care of it, but this is the easiest way.
