php running error

Thanks first.
i am a layer of programming. I encountered two problems.

1) after installation of PHP, i want to reconfigure my php, how to do that?
for example, i want to modify the time limit.
what is the exact command?Pls, tell my step by step.

2) it is a mystery on running scripts.
i use PHP as GCI without apache or other servers.
The scripts are mainly for restructuring a file which contains many data.
The scripts are work for a small size file
e.g. 400k
but when i try a larger one, eg. 2M, its keep on running without stop until time out.
then i rise the time limit, it is keeping on
running. i guessed that it has stop runnigs
but can not reach the final prompt.

For the first question, you need to edit php.ini.

As for the second question, perhaps, it will be solved after the time out period had been increased in the php.ini file.
