Testing environment for php

I have php scripts I would like to test but find it a pain having to load up the webpages etc. just to see if they are going to work.

Are there any solutions that speed up this process? (free if possible)

Is this what the zend program does?

You can install PHP just about anywhere, including the machine you are writing the scripts on.
For Unix the choice is obvious, and for windows you can have a look at forxserv at sourceforge.net That will install php, apache and mysql on just about any windows machine.

Zend is a brand, they make lots of programs.

I've heard rumors of a PHP editor that included a PHP parsing utility so you could just tab between the source and output but I don't know anything about it. And anyway, how is that any better then just loading PHP on your system? Just save and alt-tab to a browser window.

'That' is better because it lets you step-through the script line by line,
and lets you watch the content of variables while you do it.
That's perfect for debugging. (I think we've all had times where we spammed our scripts with echo commands to see what happened to one particular variable right?)

Yeah, an inline debugger would be helpful. Anyone know where to get this magic editor? One thought though - will it support all of the extensions?
