fopen - parallel downloading

Just wondering if anyone has figured out a way of fopening multiple url's at the same time?

I have a script that retrieves about 10 pages and parses the content and I am trying to find some ways of speeding it up. Would it help to retrieve all the pages at once, simultaneously somehow?

You would probably have to do the work from a language that supports threads, like Java or C.
