command line vs web

This is really simple and basic. The following code gives error on command line:

echo "hello world \n";
functioncall();
function functioncall () {
echo "this is a function \n";
}

I am sure the problem is with the way I installed php. Isn't there a way to configure such that both the web version and command line versions work?

declare the function first......

also try something like this:

echo "hello world \n";
echo functioncall();
function functioncall () {
return "this is a function \n";
}

that would fix the problem if the function didn't know about the standard out...

Sorry, should have given the error. For Michael's suggested code, this is the error:

hello world

commandline.php: syntax error at line 2: `(' unexpected

These were my configuration options:

You think it is unable to find the php interpretor? Can I force it to look at some file? Also, if you look at my configuration options in previous posting, I have configured it as apache module and not as a cgi. Can't I run php from both web and command line?

You will have to compile a seperate CGI version of PHP.

You can force the system to use PHP by adding this at the top of the script:

#!/path/to/php

BUT! this line will show up on the webpage if you run the script through a webserver.

If you don't want this, you'll have to specify that this script should be run by php:

/path/to/php -q script.php

just confirming before I dirty my hands again with installation.

I don't have a file named "php" in my installation directory. So, I need to get that by compiling a cgi version (I hope the web version works after this new installation).

Can you suggest what changes I should make to the following configuration options so that web version still works? I used these for installation as an apache module:

--prefix=/home/wwwuser/php-4.0.6
--with-apache=/home/wwwuser/apache_1.3.20
--with-mysql
--with-sybase=/home/wwwuser/sybase
--with-config-path=/home/wwwuser/php-4.0.6
--with-pdflib=/home/wwwuser/utils/pdflib-4.0.1
--with-jpeg-dir=/home/wwwuser/utils/jpeg-6b

To get the CGI version of PHP, do everything you did for the apache version,
but leave out everything that has to do with apache.

Oh God, I am so nervous. It took a week to get the apache version running correctly. I hope this cgi installation doesn't mess up my apache installation. Do you think I should install it in a directory other than where I installed the apache version? Thanks for all the great help. Farzal

as long as you installed or compiled the php executable you can...

actually, i don't know what it is doin't when you just type blah.php on the command line... php scripts are not executable themselves, so you normally have to do something like

/usr/local/php/php blah.php

this <pathto>/php implies to me that there should be an executable file, php, in that directory.

But I do not have any php* in my installation tree. All I have are these 2 dirs:

/home/wwwuser/php-4.0.6/lib/php/
/home/wwwuser/php-4.0.6/include/php/

but they do not contain any php .. so I am thinking I need this php .. am I correct to think that I need to install a cgi version for this purpose?

Thanks for answering my basic questions. Usually I am not afraid of experimenting (took a week to get apache version running) but since apache is already working fine, I am afraid to take any changes. Thats why I am confirming before running configure* 🙂
