get_browser() & browscap.ini

I'm writing a stats program for a friend, and I'm trying to use browscap.ini to get the browser, in the hope it'll be easier to update the list than manually decoding the user_agent string, however...

Most of the USER_AGENTs are coming through as:

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows 98; fs_ie5_04_2000i)

And since get_browser only matches if it's EXACTLY the same, it doesn't pick anything like that up! (All isps have started putting their names in at the end, such as Freeserve in the one above).

Any ideas what I can do? Should I spend months tracking down all the possible combinations and write my own function that doesn't require an exact match, or what?! 🙁

I don't know how consistent User Agents are in PHP. But since the string is semi-colon delimited. This is how I'd attempt it:
1. Split the string between the parenthesis.
2. Gather the info from the second element in the array.
3. Next I would run a regular expression to check for the browser type (MSIE/Netscape).
4. Tally up your results!
