Comparing timestamps

Hi..does anybody know how i can compare timestamps to find out if half an hour has elapsed between the last stored timestamp and the current timestamp.

Do i have to convert the timestamps back into hours and minutes...currently they are stored by MySQL in the format

20010807101123 YearMonthDayHourMinuteSecond

can i work with this?

get them from mysql using unix_timestamp.

a half hour is (60seconds*30min) so

if (time() - mysql_timestamp) <= (60*30) {
// we're within 30 min. of whatever
}
