PHP and SSI?

Hello.
I am using Apache for Windows (realease 1.3.20) and the current PHP module. In the rest of my site, I have a SSI top and bottom to my site (the content fits inbetween). This works when I have an extension of .html or .shtml (I have that much figured out), but when I try to use SSI with a page using the .php extension (like with my Phorum), it doesn't even display the error message that "an error occured when processing this directive", so I am assuming that Apache is not looking in those files for a .php extension. So how to I get SSI to work with PHP? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ya gotta keep SSI & PHP seperate. PHP has functions that can replace SSI directives.

Well, thanks for the help, but being the novice PHP programmer that I am, what are those functions?
I've tried
<? php
include = "../../top.txt"
?>
But that doesn't seem to work.

yes, php has all that asp does and more... heh sorry.. i was not a happy camper the day i found out asp didn't support its own function to include files (besides the bulky FSO)... with php you can and easily conditionally include files!
