Run PHP4 under PHP3 !

I'd encountered interesting problem. Our Apache server for a long time has only PHP 3 support. Now it runs PHP 3 and (!) PHP 4. So, the question is: how I can integrate an output from one of the PHP 4 files into PHP 3 program.
I've tried
<?php
include ("PHP4filetoinlude.php4");
?>
but the interpreter uses PHP3 and my PHP4 functions doesn't work. (Apache chooses the version of PHP to use by the given extensions).

You are going to have to pretty much change the extensions on all your pages from .php or whatever it is now (.php3 for me) to whatever extension is mapped to php4 (normally .php4). If you have administrator rights to the box you could simply remap all the .php3 pages to use the php4 engine, but if you are like me, you are leasing space and have no control over it.

If someone else has a better way please tell us, I just went through this (voluntarily, was extremely pleased that we got php4).

'Cause I've some troubles with string operations while trying to use PHP4. And in addition I have to modify some links in my code.

The site was developed in PHP3 and I have troubles with string operations on PHP4. I really need some functions from the PHP4 (it IS really much powerfull than PHP3). Maybe try to use sockets or passthru()?

I'd port everything to PHP4 and forget about PHP3.

It may be a lot of work, but in the end you'll be happy you did it.

I've tried to follow your advice and notice that have no troubles now! The bug was in the PHP 4.0.6 for Windows (it's present in this version for this time!) and the Unix version doesn't seems to have this bug (i think it is in the CSV functions).
