The manual says "PHP, which stands for 'PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor'..."
Why the intial P? I could understand "Pre Hypertext Processor" or "Pretty-good Hypertext Preprocessor" but don't know why the initial P in PHP stands for 'PHP'.
It's one of these self-referential things like GNU (GNU's Not Unix). Very popular in the Open Source Community. I personally find it almost as irritating as the use of "foobar."
I think it is pre hypertext processor
It actually stands for Personal Home Page. The guy developed it for use on his own website.
I think somewhere down the line someone thought it better have a more interesting name, hence all the HyperText Processor stuff.

You can read in the manuals that it originally meant "Personal Home Page", but it grew into much more than what that title implies. They now are using the "self-referencing" acronym as he stated.
The only thing that Michael got wrong was the spelling of "FUBAR", which is an acronym for "F**ked Up Beyond All Recognition". :-)
I thought they changed into the recursive acronym, other than that though, PHP stands for quality, open standards, and a great community spirit. :-P.

P.S. Sorry, I couldn't resist..
Absolutely :-)
