Hi,

I would like to know how I can collect IP address information from my visitors.

Say for instance, I have a PHP voting script, I would like to submit the IP address to the database so that the same voter cannot vote using the same IP address.

If you know how to do it, please help me with this by sending me a mail at mnh3000@yahoo.com ....

I am new with PHP and I cant go far without your help....

Sorry, but IP address is not a reliable method of doing that. Dialup customers tend to get a different address every time they connect, whereas large host systems (e.g. AOL) and even modest-sized networks running NAT on their routers gives the reverse: lots of individuals all coming from the same address.

If I were you (and I'm pretty new too) I would just use a cookie to determine wether they have voted yet or not.

I'm not you or him, and I wouldn't use a cookie either--they're just as unreliable as the IP address, and unlike the IP address for most users, are subject to direct manipulation--delete the cookie, vote again--pretty neat!

Note I'm not proposing any solution, because there isn't any easy one.

The first thing you have to do (and you may well have already done this, I just haven't seen it stated here) is to specify exactly what your population of eligible votors is, and what the results of the vote will be used for. The problem is, if the purpose is anything more serious than "casual amusement", there really aren't any practical guarantees of accuracy that don't involve some kind of out-of-band identification of the participants. (And I'll happily state that most news organization polls probably don't even rise to the level of "casual amusement"...)

The thought did cross my mind, but I really dont think it is a good solution, when compared to the one with IP addrs.

Because:

The surfer can have cookies switched off and can completely discard them.
The surfer can use two or more browsers at the same time (like me, I am a web designer and like to see how a page looks in different browsers, and ofcourse code accordingly)...
I think I knew more ... tell you when I remember them back.

I would also suggest you to start using IP, and pls tell me if you have any solution with IP address
