Day Month Year inquiry

hi guys,

i am currently developing a reporting system for our company, i am having problems with day, month and year conversions.

example today is August 2001, but users make their report usually 5th day of next month month that is September 5, 2001... i should give them at least 10 days allowance like if today is September 10, 2001 in my script it should be August 30, 2001.

i know using mktime() will do the trick but how about the year???

of course i can get january but how to know if it is 2002 or 2003???

is there a way to fix this problem?
