Connecting Red Hat to Windows

I have just built a red Hat 7.1 server and now would like to make a connection from it to my Windows 2000 server.

I have a hub setup and both systems have ethernet cards.

How can I get the systems setup so I can pass data bck and forth between them?

If they're both on the same physical network, and both have ip addresses on the same subnet, that's all you need to do from the physical and network layers. From there on out, it's all up to the applications.

For starters, can you ping each box from the other?

Next, assuming apache is up and running on the RedHat box, can you retrieve a web page from it using Internet Explorer on the 2000 box?

yes and if you want to tranfer something like folders and files in bulk you can ftp them via windows to linux machine by setting up the ftp server there and use cute ftp.

If you would like to maintain something like a shared folder or something then setup samba server in redhat machine and use them both in the same domain

ftp and telnet are fine, but really the 900 pound gorilla of windows/linux interoperability is samba (http://us1.samba.org/samba/about.html). essentially it allows you to mount your windows shares on linux as if they were local partitions and allows you to open up file systems exported from linux on your windows box. rh 7.1 comes with it pre-installed (i'm pretty sure) so just read the documentation and experiment with it a bit.

note that you may not want to run samba all the time as it can present a security threat if your rh server gets compromised (ie the cracker has some access to your windows box).
