The case for PHP

I'm currently trying to persuade the company that I work for, that PHP is the best language to choose for a web-based data reporting project.

However the 'management' seem rather scared of 'open source' software, and arn't entirely convinced that PHP is the way to go.

Recently one of them discovered that the Barleycard website is written in PHP, and he's starting to warm to the idea, 'if it's good enough for them, then it should be good enough for us'...

So does anyone know of other 'high profile' websites that are build with PHP, ones that show obvious signs of being written in PHP.

Does anyone have any stats on the amount of major sites that use it???

I'm looking for as much ammunition as possible, as I REALLY don't want to have to learn ASP.. 🙁

The most current case study (in the same general section) is from a developer working for the US Naval Research Laboratory. Guess what they use for their intranet... yup, PHP.

Zend has just launched a relatively new section on their site called "Why PHP?".... it's linked off the main page (you can't miss it🙂 and should provide you with some ammo in your fight to stay ASP-free. Persumably your bosses will realize that if PHP's good enough for the US Navy and Cisco Inc., it's probably good enough for them🙂 HTH.

also check out http://www.php.net/usage.php they have some graphs of the number of sites using php..

at the bottom of that page is a link to SecuritySpace's Web Survey .. this has a lot of usful facts to persuade people.
