mmmm, yes..but that doesn't solve my problem of the intial detection of what portion of the string in the textarea has been higlighted. How do I detect that? I'm assuming there's a javascript for it, detecting mouse position. But lets say that the word great is highlighted, and java passes that to me. So I resubmit the page with my textarea putting bold tags around the word great..BUT, what if there is more than one GREAT in the textarea? How do I detect I wanted the second great bolded? any ideas?

well, you could use xml or your own tags to make very basic changes like bold or italic and store them in a library and have ereg_replace process the content and replace your tag with the real html tag.
