Users Uploading Text

Hello All,

I'm feeling very frustrated. Grr!

I'm trying to create a place where people can upload their own articles and they can edit, delete, upload more work, etc.

So I need a way to do that and also a way for them to create a username and password.

Suggestions?

Unfortunately, I'm not a PHP expert by any means. Should I throw in the towel and try to hire someone? If so, what's a reasonable rate to be charged for such a project?

Well... Knowledge is power.... I remember when I was starting php and had an impossible project.. I bit the bullet though and learned what I needed. That knowledge sticks with you. However if you need something speedy you might want to hire someone. As for price... its all across the board. I dont know the average.

If you do chose to press forward and learn all of this, you might want to start by creating a database for the site that houses all there passwords and login names and possbily even the files (blobs). You might also want sometype of database field that give priveleges on those files etc. As for a way of creating username and passwords... then you might want to have them ultimatley "log into" the database. That means that you would create a new row or something in the database from a webpage.

If you decide to go through with it good luck.. and feel free to come back and ask the forum for help on any particular issues you are having.

Half of what you said went right over my head. LOL Maybe I am in too deep but I'll try to make it happen myself.

Incidentally, I see that you take on projects like this one. Contact me here or via Email, if you wish, with a rough quote for your services. I have written all of my pages in HTML and would only require a log in page and a way to upload text. My budget may gasp since I'm not a company just an individual but I definitely want to get this part of my site off the ground.

Either way, I certainly appreciate your help and have printed out your suggestions. They are truly, truly appreciated!

Here and at DevShed (http://www.devshed.com) there are good tutorials - you need to learn the basics of database create and the PHP that goes with that.

Here, at Zend (http://www.zend.com), and at SourceForge (http://www.sourceforge.net) there are many code snippets for doing what you want - it is very common.

But I would suggest, if you expect it to get big, that you get someone with experience to do it - database optimization can be really important.
