I have to give a seminar on php

The company I work for(whose client base includes GE and other larger international corporations) uses jsp,asp and Im trying to push them to include php also in their skill base ... I need some help in this regard... An overview kind of thing on the technology, advantages, comparisons with other similar applications.

Some thing that will make them want to learn and switch to php ... I have a few months experience working with php and that was almost 7 months ago... the guys I am dealing with are experienced (lot more than me) coders and management guys.

HELP ME PUSH PHP ... I dont know jsp or asp so gimme something that will talk from the point of such coders and make them consider php. If my company starts using php in their development then it will probably help to push it closer to the kind recognition and status that asp or jsp has... or atleast get the ball rolling....

Well, one point you may want to stress that with the Zend engine, PHP can be much, much faster than ASP. You can also stress that it's absolutely free. I can't imagine how much you're paying for licenses to Microsoft if you have a lot of clients. Also stess the fact that PHP supports scores of databases, including ODBC, and is extremely powerful and easy to use with said databases. How's that for a start?

Thanks Jordan, I can use that on Microsoft.. but jsp is free too... I have to get these guys out of jsp first ..asp will be easier to push out.

You can stress that PHP is a functional object-orientated language. One of the main strengths you hear touted about Java is it's pure OO approach. This has been carried over into JSP as well. While OO has great advantages in web-based work, in many cases OO web-apps are like trying to kill a fly with a 5 lb. sledgehammer. Since OO tends to unnecessarily bloat web proggies, why limit yourself to only OO? With JSP, that's the case. With PHP you have the option of using either procedural, functional, or OO approaches depending on the situtation you're coding for.

Besides, much of what I've read regarding JSP indicates that, while it shows great promise, it's still kinda buggy at the momment and takes much more server resources to run than either PHP or ASP. However, take that with a grain of salt since this is what I've read, not experinced (my JSP experince is severely limited).

Thanks Geoff... any web sites you know or heard of that have benchmarked php, jsp, asp in terms of database connectivity, speed, ease of use, code portability, etc..

One great thing about php is that learning curse is very short. If individual is familiar with some procedural programming language then learning PHP will be very easy.

Php code (for the most part) can be written on any system, because php run time compiler is available for windows, mac, linux, and other platforms. I've written code on linux and windows and it ran great.

Also emphasize that php scripts can be cached using zend cache(awefull expensive) or apc (alternative php cache, which is free). It uses mmap (memory mapping) facility or semaphors to cache php script into memory, so that step of building op structure is eliminated, thus performance increase can be from 50% to 400% depending on circumstances.
