Disk space

hi all,

How can i get the total disk space occupied by a directory .
I have tried du -s or du -k of linux but it was not return correct figure.
Is there any php script through which i can able to get the exect disk space.
I have to make a browser based file manager through which user can upload hi websites but i must restrict him to upload more then 35 mb .That why i need these functionality to calc. disk space.

but i think disk-total-space() not available in php(i am using php4.0.3Pl1). And through diskfreespace() i cann't solve my problem.

Currently i am trying to a recursive function which will calculate all file size .
