Who can recommend good IDEs with PHP support / debugger?

Why indeed. There are tons of packages that let you install your own webserver on your workstation, so why an editor that can do the same?

...what I ment was something like frontpage for ASP, with three windows. One for composing my layout, one for editing the html and adding scripts, one for debugging and one that shows the result. So, what I am looking for is just an integrated solution, just one single install....

..that's why I do not like it. I prefer lean, clean tools. I'm new to php, but I'm sure there must be some good IDE SW. I'll try PHP Coder. thanks for the tip.

The thing about PHP is that it's not static, what it looks like depends on what the PHP scripts do, so wysiwig is not relevant.

Some points:
1. I am currently using PHP Coder from www.phpide.de, and i think it's a really good tool.
2. I hate the extra dung that Frontpage adds to your web site.
But I gotta admit that if your a newbie when it comes to HTML editing (which I am), it helps to get things done quicker with it's visual editing capabilities. I use it for quickly generating a Form or some other thing, and then I just copy and paste the necessary code. :-P
It also gives a nice graphic way to edit CSS files.
3. No browser integrated solution beats having your apache web server installed on your PC.

if your gonna learn php i recommend having a good knowledge of codeing html by hand. my experience with frontpage is that it puts SO MUCH JUNK in an HTML file it can end up being huge for the simplist of things. Its terrible when u end up surfing a frontpage site - you can spot em from a mile off. If you like - well, have fun - for everyone else goto your favourite website and view the source 🙂

This might be off topic, but I've read that most people are using frontpage and are getting a lot of junk code. Why not try Macromedia's Dreamewaver, it does everything that frontpage does and much more plus it doesn't do the junk code...in fact there is even an option in Dreamweaver to clean up frontpage's code.

Hi, folks!

thank you for all the comments and hints. In the meanwhile, I have installed Apache Server, PHP 4.06, MySQL and PHP Coder. This all seems to work very well. For WYSIWYG to HTML I use Netscape editor.
then, I got Dreamweaver Ultradev Evaluation Version, will test it. It seems to be expensive 🙁

all wysiwyg edidtors have a lot of junk code. well junk to us - but they need it to work. their javascript can sometimes be a bit crazy too.

Show me a wysiwyg editor that produces HTML in the same sort of way as someone that handcoded it - and ill say well done.

dont buy the wysiwyg!!!!

go to your favourite sites - and VIEW SOURCE!!

see how they do it and then write it yourself. in a few weeks you'll be handcoding HTML better than any wysiwyg.

( of course - dont just blatently rip their code! 😉

as a HTML editor i recomend some text editors with highlighting (EditPlus2.x suit fine to me: you can configure highlighting for HTML, CSS, C++, PHP, ..., templates for them and so); as ASP editor the best tool i found is Microsoft VisualInterDev (nice codelightng, reasnobile connection to databases and so; sound weird, but it's true) and for PHP i recomend PHPEd - this tool have some kind of PHP compiler, so you can check your page and see if there any errors
