Hypothetical: php webserver

OK, a hypothetical situation followed by a dumb question:

I have 1000 lines of php spread over a dozen files that I want to put in one file. Aside from the obvious larger size taking longer to parse for one large file - what are the advantages to webservers (not to code management) of breaking up code over many files?

I'm absolutely ignorant of the internals of webservers in general. Do they cache many small files better than one large one? What are the issues involved in piping everything through one php file?

Large scripts take longer to parse,
but many smaller files take longer to load from disk. (more read/write operations)

Which of the two is faster for you is a matter of benchmarking.
