I'm using PHP in browsers but can it be used to develop GUI applications. If yes, how and where can i find info for that?
Yes, as a matter of fact it can... However, it is still in a very infant phase.

If you want to create a "real" application, it would probably be best to use c/c++.... It really depends on your needs.
