JAR is an acronym for Java ARchive and are the Java equivalent of tarball's. Yes... they are a compression format. Assuming you have the Java Runtime Environment installed, you uncompress them from command line like so:
jar xvf myJar.jar
You should also extract them using common compression utilites (at least on Win32) like WinZip and WinRar. HTH.
