Subdomains

Hi there,
I was wondering if any one knows a PHP script trough wich users could make their own subdomains. With auth support and error checking things. Because currently if an user wants to have a subdomain we have to edit the httpd.conf our selfs. It would be nice is some kind of script could do this for us. So if anyone knows one or could send me in a direction I would be very pleased.

Uhm.. you make subdomains by editing the httpd.conf? What am I missing here?

We have wild card dns. so everything from *.foo.bar is resolveable.
So let say a user has foo.bar
and wants the subdomain bar.foo.bar
We would add a subdomain to the virtual config in our httpd config for his domain.
Wich would look something like this.
<VirtualHost 1.2.3.4>
ServerName bar.foo.bar
ServerAdmin [e-mail]
ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /path/to/foo.bar/cgi-bin/
DocumentRoot /path/to/foo.bar/HTML/bar
ErrorLog /path/to/logs/bar.foo.bar.error_log
CustomLog /path/to/logs/bar.foo.bar.access_log combined
</VirtualHost>
So now it would be nice if I have some sort of script wich could add this sort of stuff automaticly to the httpd config .. maybe trough a way of adding it in a file and cron would add it to the config.. im just guessing here... because httpd runs as nobody..
Or you got other suggestions ?

I'd add the data to a database, and generate the config files from scratch every time, so that obsolete domains are also removed.
