Hardware for a Linux-box

Hi!

Maybe this is not the place-but I'll ask anyway :

What kind of hardware-system is best suited to install Linux on?

Is it a AMD Socket A, Intel Pentium III, or others ?

If you have an idea for a complete hardware-list for a Linux-computer, I would be happy if you shared it with me :-)

...cause I am new to Linux, and I want to build a computer where all the components have Linux-drivers...of course...

Well, um... I am running on AMD and Pentium. I computers ranging from pentium 90 to a 1.2ghz AMD Thunderbird. Linux will run on just about anything (except Mac and they are working on that 🙂 ). The only thing I could tell you about hardware in general:

A) Dont get a cheap ethnet card (aka. NetGear) there arent many drivers out there for em. Go with a 3Com (more expensive but better cards)
😎 Shop around for sound card drivers etc. Most hardware out there has a Linux driver for it in some form or fashion.

C) Just as a not I preffer the NVIDIA chipset as far as video cards go. They have a nice architecture and the drivers are readly available
D) After installing if you arent already at that level... I would recommend upgradeing your kernel (might already be though) to at least 2.4.x as this supports USB a lot better. You can stick with like a stable 2.2.19 or something but you have to find backported USB modules for these Kernels.

These are the only suggestions I would give you. Other than try posting to some of the linux news groups or depending on what flavor of linux you install (I am running Debian (http://www.debian.org)) you could always talk to those guys via IRC or they have mailing lists.

But what about the MSI K7T-266 PRO mainboard?

It has the VIA KT266 (VT8366 & VT8233) chipset - is that ok for Linux?

At VIA's websites I could not find any Linux-drivers for this chipset. Maybe it isn't necessary to install these drivers when running Linux - do you know?

As far as mainboards are concered.... I have never had to install a driver for a mainboard. I would go with an Asus board but that is just me. I have many friends with these boards and linux and they are very happy.

Your board sounds fine as well. Its really just a preference thing.... so to answer you question no, I have never had to install a driver for a motherboard.
