Reading File (Turning PHP into JScript)

I'm just wondering how you can read a file. For javascript, you can read a text string like:

string="lentin64 stevenc php";
if(string.indexOf("lentin64") > 1){
document.write("Hello!");
} else {
document.write("Not Logged in");
}
