multiple 404s

I've honestly looked for this with no luck so thought I'd try the forum.

I'm looking to add multiple 404 error pages in one site. The site is somewhat big (2000 pages or so). There is a 404 for the whole site but I want to add some for specific directories. So if someone gets lost anywhere in the site they get the main 404 but if someone gets lost say in www/tutorials/ they get a specific 404 for that.

I'm sure it is something simple (if it's possible) but I don't want to start experimenting on the live site.

Since you already have a custom 404, just modify the code in it to display different messages depending on the URL.
