Shared Objects .so

I'm trying to call some C functions I wrote. After I compile my program helloworld.c to helloworld.o I make it a shared object with -shared and get a helloworld.so, copy it to /usr/lib/php4. I include it in php with dl("holloworld.so") then in my code I say <? hello_world(); ?> and should export this function right? What more do I have to do..I keep getting Warning: Invalid library (maybe not a PHP library) 'helloworld.so'

I've never done this but I seem to recall that there is some kind of PHPizing that needs to be done to make an object work with PHP.

Look in your PHP source directory for a README.SELF-CONTAINED-EXTENSIONS and README.EXT_SKEL. I believe that these will help with what you are doing.
