I know this is off topic but I'm posting here anyway because I bet someone will have some thoughts on the matter...

I am looking to looking to start maintaining a friends very large site. Any thoughts on what type of hardware would be necessary to run a site that does 220 gigs a month of traffic, mostly static content?

i saw this potato server once. made out of a potato. you could try rigging one of those up.

i think that it could only serve up like 10 pages a minute or something. you could make a potato cluster though.

220Gbs/month? Are you serious? Who on Earth hosts that and how much are they charging? How many views/month does that translate into?

On the hardware side you'll be needing very big, very fast HDs - probably SCSI RAID. You'll probably need a fairly decent CPU (duals even).

As it's static content, I wouldn't think RAM would be a top priority, but it's cheap so you may aswell get a fair whack just to be safe.

You might want to look into server-side caching solutions though 🙂

Even at double rate in the peaks its still only 160K/sec

Why don't you first see what the actual throughput from the current site is, and what the specs from the current server are before you start building a very large and expensive and over the top server?

FYI: a P2-300 LAPTOP can easily generate over 3MByte/sec of traffic.

Hmm, well i'd still like to know just who's going to host it, since I had trouble getting hosting for a 30Gb/month site.

Yes the general opinion that I am getting is that the pipe is going to be the bottleneck not the hardware.

I have a bottom of the line linux box at rackspace.com (750mhz, 256ram) with unthrottled bandwidth. I'm hoping that I can get away with an upgrade of ram only.
