How do you rename a text file?

I have a bunch of files that act as headlines for a simple front page - I have a content tool that adds new headlines but just saves over the previous file. I would like to be able to increment the name of the file so it is moved down and archived...

Could someone please tell me how that is done...?

'incrementing' the name means you must somehow know what the previous name you renamed to was.

perhaps it is easier to rename to the current timestamp, like 20011031211033 (YYYMMDDhhmmss)
That way you nearly always have a unique filename (unless you rename twice in one second) and the filename tells you something about when the file was renamed.
