wierd php/postgresql error

Has anyone seen an error similar to the following?

Warning: PostgreSQL query failed: ERROR: pg_atoi: error in "asutcliffe": can't parse "asutcliffe" in <php file path here>

the record in question is in a varchar type field, so i'm lost at this point.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

For anyone who has experienced similar errors, i figured out how to get around it. When i sent the query to postgres (using pg_exec(), i simply had to specify which fields i wanted to be returned from the query instead of using "select * from tablename where id = '$emp_id'".

Does anyone have even a tentative explanation why one query style may work while the other does not?
