php safe_mode off in some dirs

is it possible to configure php and/or apache so that php is in safe_mode except in some directories?

Doesn't that defeat the entire purpose of PHP_SAFE mode in the first place?

nah...

its just because the webmaster of my domain is afraid of letting run php in non-safe mode, so that any1 who knows php really well, can manipulate the server.
...but, on the other hand, he wants me to do some scripts for him, which interfere with the safe_mode.
So we both r looking for a solution, how to allow or override (which i think isnt possible) the safe_mode in a certain dir.
