Simple Mail Problem on Nt server

My administrator installed php4/mysql on an NT server I use. We are both total newbees with PHP. I wrote this script to test to see whether the mail was functioning:

$mailcontent="Bill ";

$fromaddress="[e-mail]";
mail($toaddress,$subject,$mailcontent,$fromaddress);
?>

This is the error message that is returned:
Warning: Server Error in E:\customers\ron\prayer\testmail.php on line 8

Line 8 is the mail() function line.

We tried some of the suggestions in other threads but somehow we missed something and mail() is just not connecting. By the way [e-mail] is the functioning normal email address.

It has me stumped. Any suggestions?

This syntax looks wrong to me. Perhaps you meant something like this:

$mailcontent="Bill ";
$mailcontent .= "Burburski ";
$mailcontent .= "[e-mail]";

BUT it Still Generates: Warning: Server Error in E:\customers\ron\prayer\testmail.php on line 8

Any other suggestions to trace this problem down? It seems to me something isn't getting to the right place on the server.

I don't know whether this is relevant or not but my server administrator sent me this email regarding the location of send mail:

Ron, not sure if this will help but the sendmail program in PHP is
located at c:/PHP/pear/mail/

Not sure why or how but that is where PHP loaded it, does this
help any ? end.

My "customer" location is on E:\customers\ron\ Could it be that mail() is sending via a wrong path? and the error generated is the server saying "Hey what are you doing?".

If this is the case, where, or what should I be looking for to check whether mail() is accessing the right file or whatever?

I havent't a clue as to where to start looking.

Now change it to this:

$header = "From: Ron <[e-mail]>\r\n";
mail($to, $subject, $mailcontent, $header);

In response to your other comments, you shouldn't have to worry about the location of sendmail. If PHP is configured correctly, all you should have to do is call the mail() function with the proper parameters. I can't speak for NT/Win2K, but this worked for my Linux install straight out of the box.

Gotta love this stuff. I was on a unix and switched to an nt. Worked fine on unix but thought I would try to gain some experience on nt... Live and learn!

Still returns this error message:

Warning: Server Error in E:\customers\ron\prayer\testmail.php on line 8

Somehow I think mail() is missing the sendmail or smtp. The following is the info from php.info.... Maybe that will help.

I'm stumped and my nt server administrator is unfamiliar with php... This is his first shot at it.

Hi Ron,

Read up on error checking in the manual at PHP.net. I\'m sure there\'s a function that will output an error number and/or message, though I\'m not sure what it is right off the top of my head. Call that function right after the erroneous mail function, and output the results. That should lead you to the root of the problem, or if not, you can at least report that to the sysadmin.
