Generating Thumbnails

I've seen programs in asp that creates thumbnails on the server. Tho it's not free.

Anyway, I'm using php for this project, and since php is free (and far better!!) I'm sure there must be something similar around. Someone sent me to one site phpix? or something, but it said connection refused. Anyone know of any good ones. I don't mind if it creates them on the fly, or whether I call it in my script and it saves the thumbnail on the server (I guess the later will use less resources).

Anyone know of any?

I don't use php directly to create thumbnails (php's image manipulation library). Take a look at ImageMagick, specifically mogrify and convert. They are great command line apps to edit images. A thumb can be done with a call to them from php.

haha! Someone else pointed me to ImageMagicK, and it's installed and running locally great! I just need to install it remotely on the Redhat server (I've never installed anything on linux, never mind remotely!)

What version are you running? Don't worry about remote install, doing it on a terminal is just as "remote" on the console as it is from telnet. In other words it's exactly the same!

Download the rpms from the site.

Look at www.imagemagick.org and in the ftp sites theres a subdirectory for each major redhat version. I'v installed it with

rpm -ivh %rmpfilehere%

Some dependency problems might occur, but they are documented in the readme's.
