linux anyone?

hi, I've tried several sites, but most haven't provided me any solutions to my linux problems, so I've turned to you kind people.

I recently installed linux on my Toshiba satellite pro 480 CDT laptop and everything worked fine in the install. however, the problem occurs apon startup, it reads "Checking for new Hardware" (doing all the [ ok ]'s ) but when it gets to pcmcia, the thing just stalls, and NEVER goes on to scan something else, it's almost like it just continues to look for the pcmcia which is very strange. CAN SOMEONE HELP ME???

Hey Tom,
What distribution did you install? I ran into this problem on my Toshiba Satellite with RedHat and Mandrake. It turned out to be gpm (console mouse support). I turned it off ( remove /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S??gpm if you boot into X Windows and /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/S??gpm if you boot to a console. ?? is a number, varies with distribution).

If that doesn't do it, drop me an email.

hey Jerry, I'm sorry but I downloaded it from a website so I'm not sure what distribution it is, however I'm willing to try what you did, where do input these things you have stated? (i'm a newbie)

The first thing I'd try is booting with then without your pcmcia card(s) installed and see if its related.

Next is to try to get into at least a command prompt. The delete the files or more appropriately, rename them....

cd /etc/rc.d/rc5.d
mv S??gpm K??gpm
cd ../rc3.d
mv S??gpm K??gpm

On some systems you may have to use /etc/rc5.d and /etc/rc3.d instead... More of the newer distributions are putting symlinks in for both init method locations though.

i know my linux = RedHat, that's the distribution right?, I tried booting with no pcmcia installed and stuff, and I also re-installed linux with no pcmcia in the slot, however nothing seems to work, I can get into a cmd from my windows partition (which I am on at the moment) will that work?
