Virtual hosts and IE

I have a dial-up connection to the internet. So when I try to browse an adress that isn't localhost (or 127.0.0.1) it starts to use my modem. It sees my local virtual hosts only if I'm online.
I read studied all the preferences but didn't find how to switch this feature of.
Please help me!!!

I think, I know, what You need! Look 4 program with the name "fastnet99" in www (zdnet.de). It's a DNS-like helper to set subdomeins and domains to (local) IP - 4 eg.: sub.domain.net -> 127.0.0.1 and 2sub.domain.net -> 127.0.0.1 ...

How are you setting up your 'virtual hosts' ? If you want to set up a domain-like host to point to the localhost, edit your hosts file. Default location for this file is:

Most unix os's:
/etc/hosts

Windows 9x:
c:\windows\hosts

Windows 2000 (XP?)
c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

All that needs to be in this file is:

127.0.0.1 my.domain.com

(seperated by tabs) and your os should resolve it to local. I don't have a dial-up connection here to YYMV.
