wildcards + variables

Hello,
I have a select list on a form where the (very similar) options come from a select on a db. eg:

abc , 123
abce , 345
bbcc , 456
bbccd , 975

What I'd like is, when selected, only the alphabetic part at the front is returned. Is there a wildcard I can use to select up to the comma ? I tried substrings, but nothing.
