Help moving servers

This isn't strictly php but I need to move my MySQL database to another server.

How do I save the db contents into an sql file from the mysql prompt?

Also once I have loaded the sql file to my new server how do I then load it into my new database?

First, get a pickup truck and a buddy to help you move it.

If you've got a really big DB, rock the database to one side slightly and slide a dolly under it. Remember, if it doesn't seem too large and you think you can lift it yourself LIFT WITH YOUR LEGS.

After putting the database in the pickup, make sure it is securely strapped in (I like to use the ratchet-type ties). Some people like to cover their database to prevent fields from blowing out but I've never had a problem with this. However, you might want to cover it just to make sure it stays dry.

Never leave it unattended. I guarentee that if you leave it alone for just a few minutes, people will leave all kinds of crap all over your tables.

Firstly,

Use mysql dump to backup your existing database. Afterwards -> burn it on your disk, and then copy database on another server.

Personally, I've "moved" databases without using mysql dump.

One final note -> mysql.com has probably one of the best manuals ever made for any open source project (my opinion). It explains everything. Did you at least bother to take a look at it???

mysqldump is good, definately check the manual if you plan to use it. i find it easier to back up the entire mysql/var directory and drop it on the new server.
just make sure to resent the permissions as outlined in the manual
