php and visual basic VS .NET

hello!

I am in a dilima.

I want to start a big project.
I know php in a very good level, i know some things about visual basic and nothing about C# and the .Net philosophy.

I have to make a windows aplication interacting with a database and also a site also interacting with the same database.

Something like a Customer Relationship Managment system.

I would like to learn programming in .net philosophy but i am afraid if i cannot handle it well. (It's a project and there will be some deadlines.)

What do you think? Which solution is better? php and visual basic or C# in .net platform?

Are there many advantages in the .net platform?

P.S: There are many new technologies i could use there(xml, soap...)

I would use strictly PHP, it will make it platform independant. Any computer with a browser will be able to use the aplication running on the server. I think this actually is better than .net because .net is strictly for MS OS's and uses the server/client model.

I second that.... stay away from .Nyet as long as is humanly possible. Of everything I've seen MS come out with in the last several years, .Net is the shakiest and the most likely to fail. Customers (business and home) just aren't willing to trust anyone, let alone MS, with that level of control over their lives.

Besides you can write it all in PHP, the web app and the windows client (it'll even be skin-able by default🙂. Check out http://gtk.php.net/ and begin your oddessy into the lovely world of client-apps a-la PHP. HTH.

checkout the open source alternative to .Net called project eclipse at eclipse.org currently only java.

Also you could write the Win32 app on VB and let it talk to the PHP backend throught XML,XML-rpc or WDDX
