Secure upload through webinterface

Hello.
I have task to create a secure webinterface on a linux system to upload files to a local directory without giving everyone access to that directory. I'm now looking for any kind of reading on how to perform that task. Any kind of help is more than welcome.

Have you thought about using .htaccess? I think this would be your best bet.

It's not the problem with secure logins. It's the problem that the folder has got to be write protected against others than the PHP client.
