SSL and Sessions

I am unable to pass sessions to the secure portion of my domain. Both the public html and secure server are on the same machine.... i get the following error:

Warning: open(/tmp/sess_e0d64e2e54402a021f45efe8136bc1c3, O_RDWR) failed: m (13) in /path/to/secure/cart.php on line 4

line 4 is: session_start();

I pass the full session id to the secure cart.php like so:

https://www.domainname.com/cart.php?PHPSESSID=<?=$PHPSESSID?>

but still it wont pick up the session. Why is this?

Looks like a security issue to me. Unable to write to tmp directory. Check if it exists and what are the settings (owner/read/write etc.)
