Hi... here is the situation.
Exchange is their existing mail server.
They are shifting to linux and are looking at a free mail server and also a web based front end to it. (not sendmail)
They currently have many outgoing addresses ie: [e-mail], [e-mail],.. etc.;

I need some ideas or solutions as to how I am to make this transition from exchange to whatever free mail server you specify without affecting users preferences, folders etc. with little or no downtime. There will be around three thousand+ users on this server.

All the outgoing mail addresses need to have one email address.
The front end should allow for folder manipulation.
The server should also allow for virtual hosting and restriction on user mailbox size and number of users that the each virtual host admin can create.

Exchange is a messaging and communication platform, not just "only" a e-mail-system

(The same league: eg. Lotus, Exchange, OpenMail).

All mails are stored in an relational database, maybe you will have to export all mails manually.

But you will also think about:

Public Folders (document folders, adress list folders)
Global Address Lists
Sharing of mailboxes
Global discussion boxes
an so on...

Good luck, with this number of users.
Hopefully, they pay well .-)
(And it isn't a holy operating system war).
